Gipuzkoa (English: Guipuscoa, Spanish: Guipuzcoa) is a province of northern Spain, in the north eastern part of the autonomous community of the Basque Country. It is bordered by the provinces of Bizkaia and Alava, the Autonomous Community of Navarre, the French Department of Pyrenees-Atlantiques, and the Cantabrian Sea (Bay of Biscay). Gipuzkoa’s area of 1,980 km˛ makes it the smallest province in Spain. Its population is 682,977 (2002), of whom about a quarter live in the capital, Donostia-San Sebastian. Other important towns in Gipuzkoa province are Irun, Errenteria, Zarautz, Arrasate, Onati, Eibar, Tolosa, Beasain, Pasaia. Gipuzkera is a dialect of the Basque language spoken in most of the region, as well as neighbouring areas of Navarre.
